Work at an Amusement Park!
Concession Staff

If you're looking for some on-the-job fun, check out the positions you can score at your local amusement park. But this isn't just a summer job; it's more like a paid vacation! Just think about it - you'll be surrounded by rides, games, entertaining shows and mouth-watering munchies all day long!
Amusement Park Jobs - Ticket Attendants
Ticket attendants sell tickets to enter the amusement park. They also give directions and hand out maps. It's important to be a people person cuz you'll be dealing with everyone who comes into the park and answering any questions they have. Oh, and you'll be stuck inside a small ticketing booth all day, which is great on days when it's pouring rain - but that's about it.
Amusement Park Jobs - Concession Staff
Working the concession stand can be pretty demanding. You'll always have starving and thirsty peeps waiting in line for you to whip them up a stick of cotton candy, butter up some popcorn or slap ketchup and mustard onto their hot dogs. Just be sure you don't snack on the job - your job is to sell 'em, not eat 'em!
Amusement Park Jobs - Rides Operators
Rides operators usually have to be at least 16 years old cuz there's a lot of responsibility that comes with this job. You have to start and stop the ride, explain the rules of the ride, help peeps in and out of the ride and make sure they're safely strapped in. Rides operators tend to get great tans from standing out in the sun all day, so it's important to slather on the sunscreen!
Amusement Park Jobs - Games Attendants
Can you think of anything better than playing games all day long, all summer long? We sure can't, and that's why the games department is one
Games Attendant

of the coolest places to work. You'll
Games Attendant
need a good set of vocal chords cuz
you'll be screaming and yelling at peeps (in a good way) to get their attention so that they'll come over to your booth and play a few rounds of your game. If they win - which happens once in a blue moon - you get to hand out a prize!
Amusement Park Jobs - Costumed Characters
You'll definitely work up a sweat by walking around in a cartoon costume, greeting and entertaining the amusement park folks and handing out balloons to all the kiddies. You'll most likely be wearing the mascot of your local amusement park, but if you're lucky enough to work at Disneyland, you just may get to be Mickey Mouse!
Amusement Park Jobs - Cleaners
This isn't the greatest job. In fact, it kinda stinks, but someone's got to do it, right? Aside from not needing any previous work experience, one of the perks of this position is that you don't have to deal with any rude or whiny peeps - just a whole lot of smelly garbage! To make things easier for ya, clip on some nose plugs, tune into your MP3 player and constantly remind yourself that a clean park is a happy park.
Amusement Park Jobs - Bottom Line
So some of these jobs may be cooler than others, but working any position at an amusement park is enough fun to last a summer. And when you finish your shift, you can play games, go on the rides, pig out on junk food and watch shows - all for free! So head down to your local fairgrounds to find out what job opportunities are open to you.

Great Article about Jobs, Skills, and Global Markets

in the LA Times.
Striking facts:
1) As many as 45 million American jobs may be vulnerable to offshoring, including high-skilled service jobs, as communications technologies improve. The returns to a college education have stalled since 2000.
2) Education is not enough to stem the flow of jobs overseas. The lower cost of labor overseas may ultimately be more important.
3) Bush's support of education has been "anemic." The growth in financial aid spending since he took office is entirely attributable to the fact that more students qualified; average aid per student hasn't budged. The purchasing power of the maximum Pell Grant has declined from 42% of the average public U cost to 33% since 2002.

Hey Anya:

The Detroit Free Press had an article on the minimu wage this weekend. I wanted to post my letter to the editor that plugged one of your ideas from Generation Debt.

The college factor

A number of issues are related to the question of whether Michigan should increase its minimum wage. Among these issues are the access and affordability of a college education.

As Charles Owens indicated, more than 86% of employees who would be affected by a minimum wage increase live with their parents, have a working spouse, or live alone. Most of these workers represent teenagers and other college-age students just starting out in the workforce. Many work to help cover the cost of attending college. Their earnings are only a drop in the bucket of the total cost of attendance. As a result, many deserving college-age students are being priced out of college, and no increase in the minimum wage will change that.

If voters truly wish to help these young workers, they should push for capping the skyrocketing tuition increases.
